    Keeley Electronics Black Top Fuzz

    Fairchild’s Audacious 2N3565 – Vintage American Muscle

I’ve fallen in love with the vintage Fairchild Semiconductor’s 2N3565 transistor. Some call it a black glob transistor, a black dot, black top.  Whatever it’s called, it’s a piece of black epoxy that covers the top of the transistor.  I call it sexy.  The transistor has gold legs, a vintage grey body, and a sexy gloss black top.  I’ve got 1000 of them.  I have to make a Foxx Tone Machine Fuzz one day too. So, we have enough for a good couple hundred of the new Blacktop Fuzz.

They’ve Got Silicon Transistors Down in Texas! (and the Texas Motor Speedway!)

In comes the fast and furious world of the 1960s.  The silicon transistor consists of sand and a few fine wires.  Pioneered at Fairchild by Robert Noyce he said it would lead to cheap electronics.  NOICE! …NICE INDEED!  He also produced the first commercially available op-amp.  Ain’t no TS-9s without them Dr. Robert…NOOICE!!!  (Yeah I know Texas Instruments did it first in 1954, but I’ve always liked Fairchild trannies for audio mo’ betta.  It’s like Chevy and Ford.)

Again, what I really like about this transistor is the way it sounds of course.  I like the way Muscle Cars sound too.  I like the way things sound.  This little guy though…puts a smile on my face!  It’s an audio transistor that distorts very well, has just the right gain and is sensitive.  It speaks to me.  Sometimes germanium just doesn’t have enough push and modern silicon can have way too much gain.  These make the perfect fuzz sounds I think.  You know I could go on and on about sound right?  The sound a 0.800 huge lift cam makes, the sound ram horn exhaust manifolds make on a Corvette, the sound of of some Mickey Thomson’s on the Blacktop….

Back to muscle.  Back to the 1960s.  Why didn’t they keep making these glorious sounding transistors for us?  Well, Seymour Cray of supercomputer fame was pushing Fairchild for faster, not fuzzier. So what was perfect for gain, junction capacitance, and tone…was not paying the bills.  Thank goodness these gems pop up from time to time: the glorious 2N3565 glob top, drop dead sexy, Blacktop silicon beauty transistor.

    Back to Black

Blacktop Fuzz – Vintage Silicon Muscle.  This Keeley machine is a relatively straight-ahead fuzz.  The magic is in the transistors.  Germanium sounds great if it’s got the perfect gain and is just freshly off-loaded from the freezer.  Again, no Texas Motor Speedway for those old NKT-275 guys.  I like my fuzz a little dark.  I like my fuzz thick and sticky.  Not quite Velcro, but getting there.  I like it sensitive and low noise!  I don’t like noise or hiss!  I want my dynamics to reign supreme.  Tell ya what, these transistors got it babe.

The circuit features one thing I really like, a battery sag switch.  Eric Johnson (a great Texan mind you) hit it right on the head.  The voltage sag makes a difference.  It makes it spongy, softer, more pleasant on the ear.  So we sag the heck out of the supply voltage and give you a nice Yin/Yang thang.  You chose, saggy or tight. Soft or bold.  For Fuzz fans, this is where Eric Johnson meets Joe Bonamassa. Tuned in-between the two.  You never have to worry about it going dead on you when it hits about 90 degrees.  Toss it in your gig bag and know that you have that sound, just right, any time.  That border between germanium and modern silicon, the Vintage Fairchild 2N3565.  The Keeley Blacktop Fuzz – Vintage Silicon Muscle.

When will I get my refund?

Once your return is received by us, your refund will typically be processed within three business days. It typically takes a few business days for all credit card refunds to be processed and reflected on your statement. This means it will take a few extra days for your refund to show in your account after your return is processed. Please note: All actual shipping fees paid by Prymaxe will be deducted from your refund. This includes orders that qualified for free or subsidized shipping. Return shipping must be paid by the buyer. If you received a defective or incorrect item, please see the next question.

What if I receive a defective or incorrect item?

If a product is defective upon arrival, or the wrong item was received, we will send you a replacement/the correct item, and all the shipping fees will be covered by us. For defective items, Prymaxe reserves the right to refuse the return if we determine the reason for the unit failing was not covered under the warranty (i.e., if the item was damaged due to user fault or error). If you feel your item was damaged in shipping, please take plenty of pictures of the damaged box and item and immediately contact us so we can open a claim with the shipping company.

Please be very diligent with testing your defective item. Be sure to try other guitars, power supplies, cables, and amps. We also request that you take a video of the item not working. If we receive your item, test it, and find it to be working, we will give you a refund minus the cost of shipping both ways.

When will I get my replacement item?

If a defective or incorrect item was sent to you, we will send out the replacement as soon as we get the defective/incorrect item back and approve/process the return (typically within three business days). If we do not have the replacement in stock, we will issue a full refund. If you need the replacement to be sent out immediately, please place a new order, and when we get the defective/incorrect item back, we will issue a full refund of the original order.

When must I ship my return?

Your return must be received by us within 45 days of the original purchase date. This means you must ship your return with enough time for us to receive the package within 45 day deadline. If it does not arrive within 45 days, we will refuse the package. If you feel you sent the package within a reasonable time frame, but it arrived late due to the shipping company’s error, please immediately contact us to make an appeal before we refuse the package.

What if I pre-ordered an item?

Even if you pre-ordered an item, we must still receive it within 45 days of your order date in order to give you a refund, so please only pre-order items you plan to keep. If your pre-ordered item arrives defective, you will have a 48 hour period to contact us for a replacement.

    Why was my package refused?

There are a number of reasons your package could be refused by us, including:

    • It was a new/demo item received outside of the 45-day window
    • It was a clearance, accessory, or other non-returnable item
    • The package is missing items that were included in the original shipment
    • The item shows signs of wear
    • The original product box was damaged or written on/the item was not packaged in a separate shipping box

Why is the widget not letting me return my item?
