  • Diezel Herbert 2 Channel Preamp Pedal

No amp embodies the power and signature roar of Diezel Amplification like the 180-watt Herbert. And with the Herbert Pedal, that same searing gain, punishingly tight low end, and finely tuned midrange fits on your pedal board.

This high-gain stomp replicates its namesake amp’s preamp with precision. You’ll find the same wide-ranging EQ control and foot-switchable Midcut circuit, along with Presence and Deep controls for mimicking the amplifier’s power-section punch.

To make this stompbox-sized preamp even more flexible, we included a separate output for running directly into a power amplifier, using the Herbert Pedal as your rig’s front end. And you can control it all remotely, thanks to its 1/4" stereo jack.

If you want to add the savage sounds of Diezel’s Herbert to your setup, but don’t need to harness the power of the full head, the Herbert Pedal is your high-gain sonic solution.

    Sculpt your aggression

Anyone who has had the experience of dialing in a Diezel Herbert knows how finely tuned its EQ section is. And that’s exactly what you get in the Herbert Pedal. Its 3-band EQ combines with a switchable Midcut circuit to craft anything from cutting aggression to a ground-shaking scooped sound.

    • Gain control travels from rock ‘n’ roll to the most dominating metal tones
    • Tonal shaping courtesy of a 3-band EQ
    • Footswitchable Midcut circuit precisely shapes the amp’s mid frequencies
    • Presence and Deep knobs add sub-frequency punch and clarity to taste

    Preamp or stompbox, your choice

Far from just another distortion pedal, the Diezel Herbert pedal offers multiple ways to achieve its ground-shaking tones. If you prefer using pedals for your dirt, you’ll find the pedal works beautifully straight into the front of your clean amp. But you’ll also find a dedicated “To Power Amp In” output jack that turns the pedal into a fully functional preamp. Plug it into the series effects loop return of any guitar amp or directly into a stand-alone power amp, and you’ve turned your amp into your very own Diezel Herbert - perfect for players who often have to rely on less-than-dependable rental backlines.

    • Two ways to achieve the Diezel tone
    • Works as either an overdrive effect or as a stand-alone preamp
    • Independent “To Power Amp In” output is finely tuned for power amps or series effects loop inputs
    • When used as a preamp, the Bypass switch mutes your signal

My favorite distortion/preamp pedal!

I have a Code 50 and I plan to eventually upgrade to a Marshall 2525C Mini Silver Jubilee. I did not feel the 2525C quite reached metal territory, and the Code did not have any great preamps for metal. I was considering an ENGL Powerball pedal, but I stumbled upon the Diezel pedals so I purchased this (along with an Alexander Jubilee Overdrive to compare to the Code 50's Jubilee preamp model) the other month. I had initially seen the Diezel VH4 pedals, but I opted for this because in reviews the 2 channels on the VH4-2 and the normal channel on the Herbert sounded very similar, while the Herbert's midcut seemed to sound most different.

This Herbert pedal has two outputs, one for into a clean amp and one for into a power amp (or an FX return) so it can be used like a preamp. I found I like using the Herbert most as a preamp, with it sounding better this way. The Code 50 does not have an FX loop, but when I turn off the preamp modeling and just have a power amp model on (usually the Classic Marshall power amp), the amp is very quiet and when I plug the Herbert into the Code 50's input I think it sounds great (I run the Alexander Jubilee into a clean JTM45 preamp model). I had mostly been using the Silver Jubilee model on my Code 50 and had expected to continue mostly using this or the Alexander Jubilee pedal (which I ended up slightly preferring) and only using the Diezel Herbert when I want a metal tone. However, I ended up really enjoying this pedal and now I usually play through the Herbert when I plug in. I found it has a similar dark, smooth distortion like the Jubilee's, but with more growl and gain, and I have ended up liking this a lot. I would consider the Jubilee distortions like velvet, while the Herbert is more like thunder. The Alexander Jubilee and Diezel Herbert pedals are extensions of each other in a way, with the Jubilee doing cleans to hard rock well and the Herbert doing heavy blues to heavy metal well.

While the Herbert's EQ ****, in my opinion, aren't the most versatile, having 5 helps you craft the EQ plus shifting to the Midcut channel gives a tighter, punchier tone. I was surprised by how versatile the gain **** is. Most reviews showcase the Herbert's chugging metal tones, but if you turn the gain **** down it can get into hard rock and even heavy blues tones. If you turn both the gain and guitar volume almost off, you can get an almost clean tone out of the Herbert, too. It is also particularly sensitive to changes in picking weight and style, and there is a large difference in volume and gain between playing lightly and heavily. It is more versatile in this area than some ~$500 tube amps I've tried at stores.

My main wish is for a headphone jack. A 3rd clean channel would also be nice, but would probably require making it bigger and pricier and then one might want to just consider the Diezel Zerrer. I wasn't impressed by the Zerre's tones in videos, though. It is based off a VH4, which I think is tighter and birghter than the Herbert, so I would love to see something like the Zerrer but based on the Herbert. Until then, I found using a headphone amp on a clean setting helped make it sound better with headphones. I explored a couple new headphone options, and would recommend either a LEKATO headphone amp or a Fender Mustang Micro. The LEKATO sounded the best with the Herbert, with a neat option to have only a cab sim on, but the Mustang Micro sounded close just a bit looser and the Uber model sounded close to the Herbert in my opinion. I also wish there was an option to bypass the Herbert when using it as a preamp so you could switch to a different distortion pedal more easily. The lights are also a bit bright and sometimes make it hard to read, but this is a minor complaint and I imagine would be an easy and cheap fix to swap the LEDs if you are technically inclined (which I'm not).

I highly recommend this pedal. I only have two but I've tried out many at stores, and I'm very happy I have this one. If you want metal, you need this, but even if you play rock or blues you can easily incorporate this into your music with how versatile it is. From what I've heard in videos, this pedal gets very close to a real Diezel amp, which is amazing considering this is only $300 (or cheaper since it frequently goes on sale) while Diezel amps are $4000-6000 in the US. I do very much want to play a Diezel amp in person now after playing this, though I don't expect to ever own one. There is a cool story (you can see the founders, Peter Diezel and Peter Stapfer, discuss it on YouTube) about how the amp this Herbert pedal is based was named. Peter Diezel's dad helped them in their workshop early on and Peter always thought of him as loud in a good way, so they named the massive 180W amp they created the Herbert after his dad, Herbert Diezel. Knowing this story made me even happier I went with this great pedal, so I highly recommend picking this up and experiencing the power of Diezel for yourself.
