Simultaneously Amazing and Frustrating

I love volume swells and volume washes. I use those two techniques all the time in my playing. Watching the demo videos for the Sneak Attack, this looked like a great way to slip those swells and washes smoothly and rhythmically into songs, while taking my pick attack out of the mix. Plus I could use the pedal for tremolo (another favorite effect) so I could take the trem pedal off of the pedalboard to make room for this pedal. Plus tap tempo? Cool. Washes with a controlled build where I could set the waveform intrigued me, as did the flexibility of being able to automatically or manually trigger the swell with use of the tap tempo button. So, I ordered the pedal.
And the Sneak Attack does all that I imagined in really cool ways … sort of. When I get everything tweaked right, amazing swells and decays happen. Once I adjust the rhythm of what I’m playing to fit nicely with when the effect engages, sound washes in and out to create enthralling atmospherics. I love that. Only when I tweak a dial a little wrong, or switch guitars to one with a different output, or change which effects are on/off and feeding into the Sneak Attack, or change how hard I’m playing for any reason, I have to futz with settings again.
The issues amount to user (playing style) error, but I think the bottom line amounts to fine for studio, impossible for live. Let’s start with the LFO setting: here is where I find the most precision is required. Without the Lil Buddy switch in, far left (counterclockwise), the LFO dial sets the pedal to tremolo, meaning the wave attack and decay fire continuously. Far right sets the pedal to manual – meaning the attack only fires when you do a short depress of the button. In between, the LFO dial sets the strength of guitar signal the Sneak Attack must detect to engage the swell to decay. Higher LFO settings require more oomph from the guitar signal.
Therein lies the first challenge: too high an LFO setting, and my playing doesn’t start the swell. So I pick or strum and I get silence. That’s not good. So I set LFO low. Only I can’t set the LFO too low or I’ll be in tremolo mode. There’s no detent in the **** turn to distinguish the exact difference. Why is that? In part it seems to be because the difference between swell/decay and true tremolo seems to be determined by the playing you’re doing. Example: once I have the LFO low enough that my playing triggers the swell, I also often have to make sure what I’m playing on the guitar doesn’t ask the guitar to naturally sustain long enough that the sustain of the guitar is still happening after the Sneak Attack decays the note, therefore asking the Sneak Attack to open the swell again. Refine my style/technique, or adjust settings for the song (or guitar being used) and I’ll be fine. Only since part of my technique is controlling how hard I strike the strings with my pick, I have to closely think about how I’m playing. A compressor could even out my attack, but also would cause the guitar’s sustain to be present longer. It’s a tough balance to find, and it’s a balance that can be influenced by all the factors I’ve previously mentioned – which guitar, which pickups, volume setting on the guitar, which effects are on or off in the signal chain before the Sneak Attack, etc.
What about the Sneak Attack’s manual mode? Well for tremolo, it’s pretty cool. All the settings in the middle of the LFO **** suddenly start to matter for divisions of the beat, and I can create amazing gradients of the wave form. My prior tremolo was stereo for my stereo set-up, but for the combination of swells and tremolo, I was willing to sacrifice this feature on the Sneak Attack. Only, once the Lil Buddy is plugged in, all the swell/decay stuff that isn’t tremolo is only available via manual triggering on the Lil Buddy. While waveform shape is more adjustable with the Sneak Attack than a volume pedal, for manual triggering the volume pedal works fine (if not better for me). So to effectively switch between tremolo and automated swell/decay, I have to plug and unplug the TRS cable each time. That’s not so good either.
Bottom line: The pedal does what it sets out to do, and those swells and decays are sonically enrapturing and available only in this pedal or through studio manipulation of a wave form. For those reasons, I’ve held onto the pedal. The pedal works consistently well, as described, and sounds great. Only I don’t play as consistently as the pedal requires to get maximum benefit from it.

Malekko Sneak Attack

A very unique and cool pedal. I've wanted an envelope generator to play my electrics through and this pedal fulfills much of what I'd hoped for. You can adjust the attack and the decay ( sustain and release would have been cool also, but not a deal breaker). What I use it for is to take off the sharpness of the attack (think quick volume **** swells without all the effort) and also to create a very short, almost synth-like decay on notes. You have to play cleanly and pick most of the notes, but I really dig the sound. It also does some very nice tremolo type sounds as well. Remember to reset the volume using the level **** when the volume seems to disappear (turn it to the right and then to the left).
