We proudly present the SILVER LININGS drive/preamp pedal.

In those grim days of isolation and fear, of division and hard times, we took the time to patiently and painstakingly design under lockdown a drive that will bring rays of joy and inspiration to musicians around the globe.

    Not Another Clone

Designed from scratch, searching for the most versatile and useful drive that adapts to your playing style and gear, capable of producing the sweetest jazzy whispers to the gnarliest of high gain chugs, the range of tones offered by Silver Linings rivals any digital modeler around with the immediate response and complex dynamics only analog circuitry can offer.

    Variable Gain Bandwidth

The Gain control features our own “variable gain bandwidth” circuit, which keeps the tone tight and clear at any range, while keeping a controlled noise floor, and in combination with the Pre-Tone control, you get an unprecedented versatility, since it does not only cut the low end, but it acts as a Tilt control to get the exact response you want from your pickups.

    All About the Gain

The Style switch expands this range with three different gain structures- “Soft,” “Vintage” and “Hard”.

The Soft style has lower gain and softer clipping, and it takes you to that blackface amp + TS territory, special for blues and pop rhythms.

The Vintage style is unique and fattens up the tone, getting a thick full-bodied dance of ever harmonics, thanks to asymmetrical clipping. It is a perfect mix of Fuzz and distortion that responds to the touch magically.

The Hard style gives you modern amp tone, from crystal cleans to full tilt chugging metal tones.

    All About the Tone Stack

The tone stack is an original passive 3 band EQ, carefully designed and voiced for a range wide enough to adapt to different preamps and get noticeable changes when adjusted.

    All About the Mode

The Mode switch can’t be more useful. The NORMAL mode makes the Silver Lining work as a transparent drive, with sparkly highs and solid low end. The PREAMP mode is perfect to use the unit directly into a power amp without losing high end and has extra volume to drive the power amp as loud as you want. And the MID BOOST mode, which boosts the 800hz range and smooths the highs for an extra warm and round tone.

    All About the Boost

The Silver Linings boast a dual boost function, with pre and master boost levels. Use the Pre-Boost for extra gain and compression, and the Master Boost for higher output levels. Using them together, you can place your solos in front of the mix with extra gain, like having a second channel. The Master Boost also works independently if the drive is bypassed, allowing to use it to boost your clean signal.

My new favorite distortion/preamp pedal - very Marshall-y tones!

I first heard of this pedal on Anderton's and really loved the fuzzy, high gain vintage tones in the demo so I opted to order one. I've had it about two months now and I've used this pedal almost exclusively (my other pedals are currently a Diezel Herbert preamp, a Bogner Ecstasy Red, and an Alexander Jubilee Black overdrive). This pedal is very versatile, going from cleans to bluesy gain to all types of rock and all the way to almost-metal. The Vintage mode is definitely my favorite, having a really interesting clipping and then turning into essentially a fuzz pedal with the boost on and the gain up. The Soft clipping mode is really good for softer and lighter music, but can get some hard rock tones with the gain turned up. The Hard mode goes from hard rock on lower gain to almost-metal on higher gain settings, though my Diezel Herbert pedal still does metal better with a deeper roar than this can get. I was hoping based off sound clips that this pedal could replace my Alexander Jubilee and Bogner Ecstasy Red pedals. It definitely gets very close to the Jubilee, so close that I basically consider the tones the Jubilee can get as a subset of the tones that this pedal can get, so I plan to eventually sell it. I actually think this pedal gets closer to a real Jubilee (which I've played a few different types before but don't own, yet), and this pedal definitely does that darker, thicker, edge-of-fuzz distortion like the Jubilee is known for really well. I sometimes wonder with how close it sounds to a fuzzy Marshall sort of tone, and based on it being called a SILVER Linings, if there wasn't some minor inspiration from the Jubilee despite it being labeled as a completely original design. I do think the Bogner Ecstasy Red has a tighter sound and can do EVH-style tones a lot better, with this pedal being a bit too "fluffy" to get there. I typically prefer the "fluffy" sound though but the Ecstasy Red I think has a different enough tone to warrant keeping both. I would definitely love to see a "fat/tight" switch added to this to go between that thicker Slash tone and the tighter EVH tone, if they ever make a version two. Actually, these tones in a little ~20-30 watt floor amp would be really awesome.

So I really love the tones I can get from this and have been using this pedal a lot. It is very versatile and all the tones you can get from it are excellent. Also, the build quality is superb. I find the **** to feel rigid and move smoothly. Also, both this pedal and my Bogner have the pole-style flip switches for changing modes (which I like those a lot versus the more modern switches), and the Bogner ones have always felt like I might be able to accidentally snap them when I flip modes while these feel very sturdy and like they won't snap easily. The embossed sunrise image is also lovely and makes the pedal look very nice and unique (it definitely would have been a quite boring design otherwise if it was just a flat black pedal). Also, the Preamp mode does increase the volume and treble quite a bit, and it works well when I emulate an effects loop on my Code 50 by turning off the preamp modeling (it doesn't have a physical effects loop), so this pedal could easily be used directly into a power amp, making it not only tonally versatile but offering versatile use cases. Also, I have a Fender Mustang Micro headphone amp, and running this pedal in its Preamp mode through the Mustang Micro's clean Studio Preamp mode is perhaps the best tone I've every gotten through headphones. So with versatile tones, great build quality, and versatile uses, I highly recommend this lovely pedal! Especially with savings from Prymaxe's seasonal coupons or one of their demo models (like I purchased), it makes it even more worth it.

Buyer’s remorse

There were some big contenders in my search for a preamp/drive pedal to push my Bogner Phi into glorious overdrive saturation. The Phi has high headroom, but that is why I wanted it. I recently sold my Empress Multidrive, and although it was a tweakable platform, it wasn’t quite what I wanted. Ironically, the Empress MD has excellent distortion, something I’m not all that into these days. Another contestant was the Effectrode Drive pedal, but the dingbat I purchased it from gave me a run-around with the power adapter, so I returned it prior to having a chance to demo it. I have a EQD Dunes, and I recently purchased a Plumes to have “twins”. For the price, the Plumes surprised me.. quite a bit actually. It is a great pedal. Another strong contender was the Horrothia Teeth. Man I want it, but it is quite expensive. I may still purchase one some day. I realize that it is only $25 more than the Silver Linings, but I got my SL on sale.

So, about the Silver Linings.. right! Where to start? Well, I can say that my critical needs are met in spades. I view the SL as a marriage of the Empress MD, EQD Dunes and Plumes, and the Teeth (my interpretation of it from watching all of the video demos over and over again on a hifi stereo). I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. I was a metal head. My clipping taste have gravitated toward fuzz in the recent 10 years. I tend to like extreme fuzzes that rip and tear, but I have several which cover most bases. Speaking of fuzz, the SL can cover some of this territory in the Vintage mode. Oh my oh my, if you switch the boost on in this mode prepare to smile to a point where it hurts. This setting is compressed and oh so chewy. This pedal is easily worth the $300 street price for this mode alone.

I’ve only had this pedal for a few days now, but I felt compelled to write about it. The marriage with my Bogner is a match hevan would be jealous about. I have yet to try her mated to my Victory V30, and my THD Bivalve, but I think this girl will coerce any amp into a relationship of bliss. The mode I have used the most is Soft. This mode is the closest to what I think the Teeth has to offer. Along with the eq section and pre-tone control, I think I can mimic the Teeth’s capabilities quite well.

I don’t really take time to review items. I was skeptical about this pedals capabilities after reading on a forum that this pedal uses Silicon and LEDs as a clipping source. I have pedals that use those already, but there is something quite organic about the SL which makes her completely different (better) than the others. I am smitten with this one. The range of control on the gain **** is like a gain **** on a tube amp. There is a lot of range, it doesn’t go 1-11 in one one short sweep of the ****. If I was to note one flaw, I would say that she deserves a box more unique than the run of the mill box she comes in. The embossed sun stamped into the plate was a nice touch however.
